Who I Am

Hi! I’m Kristine Flanigan (she/her), a registered Psychological Associate in California.

What I Do

It is my calling to work with individuals of all ages who struggle with feeding and eating disorders as well as body image concerns.  I have over 10 years of experience in the field of psychology and have worked extensively with complex eating disorders for over 6 years, including work at higher levels of care across multiple treatment centers as well as co-occurring struggles such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, and neurodiversity.  Within psychology, my experience covers various ages and specialties, including psychological assessment, intimate partner violence, and school psychology.

I have training in a variety of approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for eating disorders and ARFID (CBT-E; CBT-AR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD (CPT). I also received Family-Based Treatment (FBT) training from Stanford University School of Medicine. Additionally, I like to integrate humanistic, family systems, and attachment modalities as I feel mental health struggles are a very unique and personal experience that requires an individualized approach. I like to work with clients to identify the underlying drives and motivations behind each struggle and help “untangle” what may feel overwhelming. My goal is to meet clients where they are in their journey to achieve a mind, body, and soul connection and lead a fulfilling life to their authentic selves.

I believe in authenticity and connecting with our values and passions. As such, and in accordance with my own values and passions, I offer faith-based counseling to those who express interest, work creatively with elementary-aged children, and lead EDTLA's college group. I also value constant learning and growth and am always working to expand my skill set. For more information on how I work with specific concerns, see the How I Help section below.

More About Me

I love learning and sharing my knowledge with others. I hold five higher education degrees (three in Psychology and two in Fashion), and I love being able to combine my passions. Speaking engagements for schools and the general public allow me to advocate for and educate on eating disorders, body image, and the connection with the fashion industry/media. I previously served as Marketing Co-Chair for the Central Coast Chapter of the International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP) board.

In my free time, I love creating and crafting, spending time with friends and family, and curating my closet. Don’t be surprised if you see me sprinkled with pixie dust, as I also frequent the happiest place on earth, where my inner child is delighted by the sighting of my gal pal, Minnie Mouse.

How I Help

Individual adults and teens:

I believe that we can all achieve what we believe to be our optimal life. If you allow me, I can help you learn more about yourself, challenge your negative beliefs and old thought patterns, and find alignment with your authentic and highest self. It is important that we build a solid therapeutic relationship where you feel supported and safe to foster the life of your dreams.

Children with ARFID:

Having worked with children in various settings, I know that kids can have difficulty focusing and paying attention, especially in a virtual setting. My background lends itself to my ability to be creative in my helping approach so that children feel engaged and interested in our work. Additionally, I know that kids are just little humans who wish to be seen and respected as we all do, and I strive to make sure they know their input matters.

College-Aged Individuals:

The transition into adulthood can be challenging. For college students, there is a particularly unique circumstance where one must learn how to navigate the intersection of recovery, academics, and independence. It is not uncommon for folks this age to feel alone in their experience or have difficulty coping. As such, I lead a weekly 1-hour college group during the school year to help students process the experience and connect with peers.

Body Image Concerns:

As a former fashion industry professional and designer, I am deeply aware of the pressures exerted by social and traditional media to conform to societal ideals. I feel passionate about challenging these ideals, providing education on the industry and its flaws, and creating a safe space in which individuals can connect with their souls and repair the connection to their bodies.
